Safely dispose unused medication on 'Drug Take-Back Day'

In Virginia, drug abuse and overdose deaths continue to rise.

In between the years of 2007 and 2015, prescription opioid overdose deaths have risen 44%. While heroin overdose deaths have have increased by more than 600% between 2010 and 2015.

"Keeping unused prescriptions around the house increases the likelihood that they will eventually be misused or abused, or even accidentally ingested by a child or grandchild," said Attorney General Mark Herring.

In a continuous effort to fight the drug abuse epidemic, Attorney General Mark Herring is pushing for more Virginia residents to safely dispose of their unused or expired medications.

On Saturday, October 22nd, law enforcement agencies and community partners at dozens of locations throughout Hampton Roads will be participating in DEA Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
