CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- A surge in phone scams has the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office on high alert.
Officials said they have seen an increase in reports of people getting calls from someone impersonating the sheriff's office.
The scammers demand immediate payment, claiming the potential victim has an outstanding warrant or they've failed to respond to a jury duty notice.
The sheriff's office said it will never ask for personal information or payment over the phone. They also will never offer to negotiate a reduced payment instead of an arrest.
If you would like more information, contact the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office at 757-382-6159.
