Assault, abduction charges withdrawn against Poquoson police officer

POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) -- Newport News court officials say charges have been withdrawn against a Poquoson police officer accused of assaulting his girlfriend.

The alleged incident took place in June when 41-year-old Earl McNair reportedly assaulted the 40-year-old mother of his two children. McNair was charged with domestic assault, abduction, strangulation and damaging a phone line.

According to Cliff Bowen with Poquoson Police, while criminal charges against McNair in Newport News have been nolle prossed or withdrawn, an administrative investigation remains.

Bowen says the investigation is an internal one looking into whether any policies or procedures were violated. If it is found nothing was violated, McNair could get his job back with Poquoson Police.

McNair is a 10-year veteran of the Poquoson Police Department and had recently been promoted to sergeant in January. He was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

McNair is currently working with the Poquoson Public Works Department.
