Attorney General Herring continues opioid fight

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- It's the one-year anniversary of the launch of a group formed to fight opioid abuse.

On Thursday, Attorney General Mark Herring spoke in Chesapeake to commend the work of the group he and the US Attorney formed.

The Hampton Roads Heroin Working Group is comprised of medical professionals, recovery specialists and law enforcement partners.

More than 1,000 Virginians died from opioid overdoses last year, or about three every day.

Herring's opponent in the November election, John Adams, is critical Herring's efforts.  He says the overdose death rate has gone up 66 percent since Herring took office.
