Auction held for Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel restaurant, shop items

Chesapeake Grill and the Virginia Originals gift shop will close permanently as construction of a new southbound tube at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel takes place.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- With the closing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel's restaurant and gift shop just days away, an online auction is being held to sell off its furnishings.

The Chesapeake Grill and Virginia Originals gift shop are closing for good on September 30, along with the fishing pier. The reason: work is beginning on a tunnel expansion project.

The combined businesses on the southbound side of the CBBT offer people an opportunity to grab a hot sandwich or a souvenir, all the while enjoying a dazzling view three miles offshore in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.

But the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project, in a five-year effort, will see construction of a new, two-lane tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel. Groundbreaking on the new tunnel was earlier this month.

Eventually the fishing pier will be rebuilt, but the restaurant and gift shop will not return.  As a result, furniture, wine rack displays, shelving and other furnishings are all being auctioned off online at Auction757.com.

The auctions for both the restaurant and gift shop began Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.  You can register online to bid on the items:
