Bicyclist hit, killed by cement truck

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- Police say a woman on a bike was killed after she collided with a cement truck on Monday morning.

James City County Police say it happened around 9:45 a.m. on Old Stage Road, near the I-64 overpass.

Investigators say it appears the bicyclist, identified as 33-year-old Theresa Morales, was riding her bike east on Old Stage Road on the right shoulder, heading to work at the Subway inside of Star Express. She attempted to cross to the other side of the road when she was hit by a cement truck.

Morales was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police say the truck driver was heading east in the left lane when he saw Morales riding in the shoulder when she began to merge into the roadway.  The driver sounded his horn and swerved, but was unable to avoid the collision.  It is believed Morales was not wearing a helmet and was listening to music on her headphones at the time, and did not hear the truck's horn.

Eastbound lanes of Old Stage Road just past the I-64 overpass were closed for nearly three hours.

No charges against the cement truck driver are expected.
