Fire shuts down Isle of Wight school for rest of the week

Cleanup underway after school fire

CARRSVILLE, Va. (WVEC) -- Carrsville Elementary School in Isle of Wight County is closed after a fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

Officials said the call came in at 2:39 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters arrived to find large amounts of smoke inside the school.

No one was hurt.

Dispatchers say the school will be closed Wednesday.

It appears the fire began in a hallway on a lock top computer cart that is used to charge laptop computers.

Crews spent the day Wednesday cleaning up the soot and smoke damage, and an insurance adjustor has been called out to assess damages.

School officials had hoped to re-open on Thursday, but the restoration process is taking longer than expected, and the school will remain closed onf Thursday and Friday.

"We are just very fortunate that nobody was here, it didn't happen during the day," said Lynn Briggs, school spokeswoman.

About 250 students from Pre-K to 5th Grade attend Carrsville Elementary.
