Dominion proceeding with wind turbines off Virginia coast

Dominion Energy Virginia has announced plans to partner with Denmark's DONG Energy to build two wind turbines off the coast of Virginia Beach.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Dominion Energy Virginia has announced plans to partner with Denmark's DONG Energy to build two wind turbines off the coast of Virginia Beach.

Dominion announced Monday that the six-megawatt turbines will be built approximately 27 miles off the coast on a site leased by the state.

It says the project will provide operational, weather and environmental experience to help open the door to larger-scale wind farm development on a much larger adjacent site.

Engineering and development work on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is expected to begin immediately with installation targeted for 2020.

Offshore wind energy is a fledgling industry in the U.S., which lags far behind northern European nations. The nation's first offshore wind farm opened off the coast Rhode Island in December.
