Elizabeth River Crossings considers going toll-free for HOV drivers

Elizabeth River Crossings Officials are teasing the idea of a toll free ride for those in high occupancy vehicles.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) – Elizabeth River Crossings officials are teasing the idea of free rides through the Downtown and Midtown tunnels.

They’re emailing surveys as they attempt to revaluate how people use both tunnels.

The survey asks several questions, including one that asks about the possibility of introducing a 100% discount for High Occupancy Vehicles.

In other words, a free ride through the tubes, just for having another person in the car with you.

Officials want to get a better feel how people use both tunnels, and if that would change with new HOV rules.

Norfolk and Portsmouth residents pay close to $1.65 per trip, and even more during rush hour. Tolls are going to increase every year until 2070.

ERC officials say the idea of free rides is in the early stages so there's no guarantee this is going to happen, but they will review data from the survey and decide in the fall.

You can take the survey here.
