VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Since the September 11th terrorist attacks, 6,962 military members have died in service to the United States, 6,962 military members who left 6,962 families to mourn and to remember.

Sunday, December 4, many families will come together for the Seventh Annual Honor and Remember Gold Star Family Evening. The event honors people whose loved ones died in military service.

George Lutz founded Honor and Remember after he lost his son, Tony, to a sniper's bullet.

Tony, a United States Army corporal, was on patrol in Fallujah, Iraq on December 29, 2005 when he was hit.

Lutz spent a lot of time with families that, like his family, experienced similar loss. He found that those families wanted to know that their loved ones' sacrifices were not in vain and that the country would not forget those sacrifices.

That, in part, prompted Lutz to create the Honor and Remember Flag and a national campaign of remembrance.

The Gold Star Family Evening, emceed by 13News Now's Mike Gooding, will be at the Founders Inn and Spa, located at 5641 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach.

Registration begins at 2:30 p.m. on December 4.

Two complimentary tickets are available per Gold Star Family, with additional tickets available for purchase.
