Flash fire sends 3 Colonna's Shipyard workers to the hospital

Three Colonna's Shipyard workers burned in fire.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC)---Three workers were burned during a flash fire at Colonna’s Shipyard early Saturday evening, according to officials from Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

Battalion Chief Joseph Milligan tells 13News Now the workers were aboard the Army Corps of Engineers hopper dredge “McFarland.”

Officials believe the fire was ignited by hydraulic fluid in the engine room that was sparked by something inside the dredge.

It was called in at 4:21 p.m.

The workers were taken off the ship by rescue personnel and transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. We do not have an update on their condition at this time.

Fire-Rescue officials say the fire was declared under control an hour after it started.
