Vigil held, scholarship to be started in Ashanti Billie's name

The family of a murdered woman is starting a scholarship in her name.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD (WUSA) -- The family of a murdered woman is starting a scholarship in her name.

The body of Ashanti Billie was found behind a church Friday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Ashanti recently graduated from Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. On Sunday night, her former classmates held a vigil for her. Dozens of people showed up, most of them calling the 19-year-old a good friend.

"Everybody that's here is here for Billie. They're not here for nothing else," said one former classmate. "They're here for Billie, they're here because we all love her. We miss her."

Ashanti's family is making plans to start a non-profit to help families whose loved ones are missing.

Ashanti just moved to Virginia Beach in August to attend culinary arts classes at the Art Institute.

Two weeks ago, surveillance cameras caught her car leaving Little Creek-Fort Story, where she worked at a Blimpie's sandwich shop.

Her car and phone both turned up in the days after.

Authorities have not released any suspect information, but the FBI is now investigating her death.
