NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Heather Heyer was killed in August in Charlottesville after a car plowed through a group of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally.

Her mother, Susan Bro, is in Newport News and will be speaking Saturday at the Andrew Shannon Gospel Music Celebration.

Bro said she agreed to speak because Heather would've wanted to be there to spread a message of peace and unity.

"She believes that all people deserved to be treated equally," said Bro. "I have a message to share with the world and the world seems to be listening now so I'm going to talk while they're listening."

The event is Saturday at the New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News. It starts at 12:00 p.m.
