NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- As the holiday weekend approaches, travel is in full swing. Friday is one of the busiest travel days of the year. AAA said nearly 6.5 million people are taking flights this week.
13NewsNow spent the morning at Norfolk International Airport. Many travelers were pleasantly surprised to find the crowds weren't overwhelming.
"We were expecting a bigger crowd. But, they were fast at United and we went right through it," said Don Scott, who is heading to Las Vegas.
Mia and Ricky Jones are also beating some of the rush, which is expected to increase as the day progresses. They left the kids with grandma and are heading to sunny California.
"We're going to see the Warriors play LeBron on Christmas Day, so I'm excited about that," said Mia.
For people who are just starting to travel, there are some ways to make sure the airport isn't overwhelming.
"Go to the desk and have all of your paperwork ready. You just plug it right in and check your bags, and then go to the bar," said Scott.
TSA can also be stressful. "You need to have everything in order, ready to go. It's certain things you can, and cannot bring," said Ricky.
