NEWPORT NEWS, Va (WVEC) – The first phase of the I-64 widening project through the Peninsula is ahead of schedule and under budget, according to officials.
New lanes on the portion from Jefferson Avenue to Yorktown Road are expected to open in November.
Phase two is also ahead of schedule, according to Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne.
Time isn’t the only thing that has been shaved either, Layne explained.
The projects are turning out to be under budget as well.
"All of those savings will be put toward continuing moving up 64," said Lane.
Segment one has come $10 million under budget, Layne said. Phase 2 is also expected to come in $20 million under budget.
“There’s an incentive for the contractor to get done early,” said Layne. “They get nothing unless they meet technical specifications. This will not sacrifice the quality of the roads.”
All three phases of the widening project are slated to be complete in 2021.
