Man shot by police officer recovering, facing several charges

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police said Monday that a person whom an officer shot on December 16 continues to recover in the hospital.

Officers secured warrants against 33-year-old Charles Herbert Reed, Jr. for  Possession of a Firearm by Felon, Concealed Weapon, Brandishing a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number, Other charges against Reed may come.

Police said an officer stopped Reed in the 1100 block of 21st St. because his car had no front tag. Reed is accused of running from the car on foot. The officer chased him to the 1000 block of 20th St. where they made contact. The officer fired his gun and hit Reed who lives in the 400 block of N. Trellis Ct. Officers said they recovered a gun that Reed had with him.

"I couldn't make out what was said, but I just know it was definitely a heated argument, and, like, I said, 'One guy got a last word out,' and, um, that's when the four shots were fired," said Aaron Jonhson who lives in the area.

The officer, who is a 7-year veteran of the Newport News Police Department, was not hurt and never was involved in a shooting prior to the incident on December 16.
