Chesapeake firefighters battle blaze at metal recycling facility

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) - Firefighters in Chesapeake tackled a blazing fire at a metal and electronics recycling facility Saturday afternoon.

They were dispatched at around 3:15 p.m. to the Sims Metal Management facility in the 4300 block of Buell Street. This is in an industrial section of South Norfolk.

Once on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a conveyer system and metal shredding machinery located inside of one of the business’ warehouses.

The fire was declared under control at around 4:10. No injuries were reported. The Chesapeake Fire Department has not yet released any information regarding the cause or extent of the damage, saying it's under investigation.

This is the third fire at this facility within the past two years.

Sims Metal Management, an Australian company, is described as "the leading metals and electronics recycling company in the world," with over 200 locations worldwide, including dozens in the U.S. and four in Virginia. Their next closest facility is in Yorktown.
