Dismal Swamp Canal to reopen, nearly year after Hurricane Matthew

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Officials with the Army Corp of Engineers say they are preparing to reopen the Dismal Swamp Canal.

Canoes and kayaks will be allowed starting August 18. Larger vessels will have to wait until the end of September.

The canals have been closed for nearly a year, after being damaged last October by Hurricane Matthew.

It took crews until March to clear more than 350 trees from the waterway.
