Gas smell leads to Hickory High evacuation

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Hickory High School was briefly evacuated Monday morning, following reports of a smell of gas in the building.

The fire department was called out around 8:13 a.m. Students had exited the school, with some placed on school buses while crews investigated.

The building was inspected, and no trace of gas was found.  Investigators believe the odor may have come from a furnace that had been started up for the day.

Students were allowed back to class at 8:48 a.m. No injuries were reported.
