CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) - A man who killed his father and brother and seriously hurt his mother will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Zachary Toothman was in circuit court Monday where he received a sentence of two life terms plus 23 years.
The sentence was the maximum the 21-year-old faced.
Toothman pleaded guilty in June.
Police found his father, Michael Toothman, and brother, 17-year-old Matthew Toothman, dead inside their home in Chesapeake. Toothman's mother, Susie, was wounded but survived.
Michael Toothman was a 30-year veteran of the Chesapeake Police Department.
Toothman struggeled with grades and relationships at Virginia Tech. He was placed on academic probation and later, a leave of absence, after failing to meet the minimum GPA.
In court Monday, Toothman said he would not ask for mercy as he attorney did.
