CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Police said 21-year-old Cedric Towe died Saturday night after someone shot him in the Greenbrier section of the city.
Emergency dispatchers received the call about the shooting on Colonial Way around 10:20 p.m.
Just four hours before his son's murder, Cedric's father, Charles Towe, talked to 13NewsNow about senseless violence.
The conversation with him took place after a stabbing in his neighborhood which is in another part of Greenbrier.
"Times is changing. Just gotta be aware, and look at your surroundings," Towe said Saturday, later telling 13News Now he shared that advice with his son regularly.
Towe said he dropped Cedric off at a 7-Eleven in Greenbrier Saturday just around the corner from where he was killed.
"Before I pulled off I asked him, I said, 'You sure you're all right?' He said, 'Yeah,'" Towe recalled.
Cedric's cousin, Arlandra, said he texted a friend before the shooting telling the friend he was meeting a woman on Colonial Way. Arlandra said from the sound of it, that woman was a no-show.
"He was just like, 'Right now, I'm waiting. She hasn't answered the phone, and she hasn't came outside,'" said Arlandra.
Sunday night loved ones held hands, lit candles, and laid roses where Cedric died. They remembered him as a hard worker who loved his family.
"He was even talking about going in the service. I was trying to get him to go into the service for this purpose because I told him it ain't nothing out here," said Towe. "It's tough, but I believe God gonna do his thing."
Cedric Towe's family have created a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral expenses.
Detectives asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or text 'CHESTIP' with information to CRIMES (274637).
