HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on Quash Street.

Just before 10 p.m. on April 20, police responded to the the 1100 block of Quash Street in reference to a shooting.

Hampton medics pronounced Travis Wardrick, 27, dead on the scene.

Lue Taylor says her son was the youngest of 10 children. She says he was a devoted son and loved his family no matter what.

He had no kids, but Taylor says he treated his 32 nieces and nephews like they were his own kids.

"It has really tore this family up,” Taylor says. “But I know God does everything for a reason.”

Taylor was in the house when suddenly she heard gunshots. She ran outside, only to find her son lying in the street.

“I thank God I was there when he took his last breath and I pray he knows I was there,” Taylor cries.

Taylor tells 13News Now the teen is her grandson.

“I know if he didn't fear for his life he wouldn't have taken my baby's life,” Taylor says.

The shooting comes one month after the first homicide of the year in Hampton. That shooting just a block away from Taylor’s home.

The family plans to hold a vigil for Travis Wardrick Wednesday night at 7:00 on quash street.

Investigators say the teen suspect and Wardrick knew each other, and were involved in an altercation just prior to the shooting.

The teen has been charged with Murder, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony.
