Argument leads to shooting incident in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is behind bars after a shooting incident on North King Street in Hampton.

Hampton police say a call came in at 8:36 p.m. Tuesday reporting a shooting that had just happened in the 1200 block of North King Street.

Officers arrived to the scene to find a 48-year-old Williamsburg man with a single gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation found that the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Michael Caines Griffith, of Hampton, and the victim were at a home when a physical altercation began and the victim fled the home.

The victim returned to the home a short time later and began vandalizing the residence. Griffith allegedly fired multiple shots through the door from the inside of the home, striking the victim one time.

The incident appears to be narcotics related, according to police.

Griffith has been charged with one count of aggravated malicious wounding, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, one count of possession of a firearm while possessing cocaine and one count of Possession of Marijuana. He remains in custody at the Hampton City Jail.
