Dog dies from smoke inhalation in Hampton apartment fire

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Fire officials say a dog died from smoke inhalation during an apartment fire that ignited Saturday afternoon on Lakeshore Dr.

We're told fire crews battled flames at the 50 block of Lakeshore Dr. shortly after 5 p.m.

Units arrived on scene to find smoke in the hallway and stairwell of an apartment complex and worked to battle the heavy smoke conditions.

Crews also had to escort residents from a nearby apartment balcony using an aerial ladder after finding they could not evacuate on their own due to smoke conditions in the hallway.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes and the residents were not at home at the time of the fire.

Investigators determined the cause to be accidental in nature. No residents needed the assistance of the Red Cross.
