Dozens of people displaced temporarily after car runs into apartment building

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Approximately 60 people were displaced from their homes temporarily and a hotel was left without power after a car ran into an apartment building in the 100 block of Pine Chapel Rd.

The crash happened around 6:10 a.m. Sunday.

In addition to damaging at least one apartment, the car hit gas meters on the building. The impact triggered a gas leak.

Two people who were in the car were not hurt.

Medics examined one person in the apartment that was hit directly for minor injuries.

Firefighters evacuated several apartment buildings beacuse of the gas leak. Crews from Virginia Natural Gas and Dominion Energy secured the gas and power.

The people displaced from their apartments temporarily were housed at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.
