Man charged in fatal Peterborough Drive shooting

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Hampton police have identified the suspect who killed a man earlier this month in the first block of Peterborough Drive.

Police tweeted about the incident shortly after 7:30 a.m. on October 12. Police say a homeowner called after finding a man dead their front yard.

The victim, identified as 20-year-old Jakwan Barnes, had been shot several times.

Investigators say two individuals were inside a residence when two known individuals forced their way inside, displayed firearms, and demanded money. A physical altercation ensued, which is when Barnes was struck by gunfire.

The suspect, 24-year-old Angel Rivas, was also shot. He transported himself to a local hospital for treatment. He has since been charged with five counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, two counts of Attempted Robbery, two counts of Abduction, one count of Attempted Maiming, one count of Burglary While Armed, one count of Wearing a Mask in Public, one count of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. 

Rivas remains hospitalized at this time.

Additional charges may be pending, as the investigation continues.

Hampton and Newport News police are also investigating the death of a man shot and killed on Pine AvenueTuesday night. Both shootings happened within a few hours of each other.
