One killed, one hurt in late-night shooting in Hampton

The search for the shooter is underway.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Deadly violence in Hampton has left one person dead and another struggling to survive.

Police received a call of a shooting at 11:37 Monday night at the Happy Shopper convenience store in the 1200 block of North King Street. As officers were responding to the scene, they learned of a gunshot victim at the 7-Eleven, also in the 1200 block of North King.

Investigators learned that the two victims knew each other.

The pair were leaving the Happy Shopper when they were approached in the parking lot by unknown suspect(s) and a verbal altercation started.

The suspect(s) then shot at the two ictims.

58-year-old Darrell Wayne Higginbotham of Perry Point, Maryland -- was found dead at the Happy Shopper.

The other victim sustained a single gunshot wound in the parking lot of Happy Shopper, but fled in a vehicle in order to seek first aid for himself and Higginbotham.

Family members of the surviving victim tell 13News Now he is the owner of the Happy Shopper, and drove to the 7-Eleven for help after the shooting. Officers responded to the 7-Eleven where they found him.

Family members say he was shot somewhere in the face and is currently undergoing surgery.

The motive and circumstances remain under investigation.
