1 dead and 9 injured after two-vehicle crash in Newport News.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- One person died and nine others were injured Saturday in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Harpersville Road and Louise Drive in Newport News.

Emergency crews responded to the scene at 3:15 p.m. after receiving a report of a traffic crash and a person trapped inside a car, according to Newport News Police spokesperson Lou Thurston.

Investigators found that a Chevrolet SUV was heading west on Harpersville Road when a Ford SUV traveling north on Louise Drive attempted to cross Harpersville Road without stopping at the stop sign.

The crash resulted in the Chevrolet striking a tree and the Ford to spin and flip onto its roof.

There were eight people in the Ford SUV, including four minors. Two adults were in the Chevrolet SUV.

Medics took the two victims in the Chevrolet to Mary Immaculate Hospital. Seven people inside the Ford were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time, according to Thurston.

Chucky Rodriguez, 20, a passenger inside the Ford, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office will review the case to determine if any charges will be filed.
