NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- The Peninsula Airport Commission is set to meet, following a scathing audit from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
VDOT ordered the commission to repay the state millions to settle a loan for the now defunct People Express Airlines.
Members have a closed door meeting to consult with legal counsel on Thursday. According to the commission's agenda, that includes the VDOT audit and People Express Airlines.
In January, the state cut off funding to the airport.
We're told the commission used millions to pay off a bank loan for People Express. It was supposed to be based at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, but ceased operations just months after launching in 2014.
Another airline, Elite Airways, decided to postpone opening at the airport because of "challenging perceptions" surrounding it.
