Areas of Newport News clean up after storms topple trees, cause damage

People in the Hilton Village area of Newport News cleaned up after a storm brought down some gigantic trees on May 31, 2017.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- People in some parts of Newport News continued cleanup after powerful storms rolled through the area Wednesday.

Sections of the city that saw damage included Hilton Village where a number of trees fell.

Malaya Wilson was home when a tree fell on her house.

“I screamed,” Wilson recalled. “It was scary.”

Wilson's father, Samuel, was at work as Wilson frantically texted him.

“Ten feet more and the tree would have crushed the van, maybe even worse,” he said. “Since I've been here, I've looked at these trees wondering what would the damage be if the tree came down.”

City crews spent all morning and afternoon cleaning up the mess. Tree service companies also remained extremely busy.
