Child injured in Newport News hit-and-run

NEWPORT NEWS, Va (WVEC) -- Newport News Police are looking for the driver of an SUV they say hit a child and then left the scene of the accident.

Police received a call shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday about an auto-pedestrian accident in the 100 block of Alan Drive.  Arriving officers found a 7-year-old boy with bruises and scratches.

Ernesto Garcia says his son Jacob is the youngest of nine kids.

He says Jacob has a broken jaw and now requires surgery.

“I’m really just confused how could they do that to a child and just run over him and leave him in the street,” Garcia says.

Jacob told police he was on his bicycle when he rode it into a slow-moving, gray SUV.  He fell off his bike, which caused the minor injuries.

The SUV drove away from the scene. Police say the driver is described as a light-skinned woman between the age of 20 and 25.

Garcia has a message to the driver and other drivers in the neighborhood.

“Be more careful in these apartments,” Garcia says. “There's a lot of kids out here, so take responsibility and present yourself.”

The accident remains under investigation.
