Hampton man seriously injured in Newport News shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A 19-year-old Hampton man is in critical condition after being shot Saturday night in Newport News.

Dispatchers received a call reporting a shooting in the 2300 block of Chestnut Avenue at 9:19 p.m. Police arrived to find a man with a single gunshot wound to his upper body.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are said to be life threatening, according to police.

A witness that was with the victim told police they were walking in the area of 24th Street and Chestnut Avenue when they heard seven to 10 gunshots. They fled the area on foot and ended up in the 2300 block of Chestnut Avenue where police and medics were called.

The witness was not injured.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. There is no suspect information at this time.
