NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) --Police are investigating a shooting at a Wawa convenience store, and say it may have been accidental.
The shooting happened at the Wawa located 12095 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
A 22-year-old man was found shot in the stomach. He was taken to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"It's crazy when you live right here its crazy cause it's close to home," said witness Frank Dailey.
Daily walks through the WAWA parking lot every day. He said you always have to look for cars quickly pulling in and out, not stray bullets.
"I heard a couple pops and then the next thing you see is police and I had to come over here to make sure my daughter was ok," said Dailey.
The timing couldn't be worse for Dailey. His teenage daughter was getting off the school bus right across the street from the WAWA parking lot when the shots rang out.
"This is new to me I've been here for like a year and a half and never heard about someone being shot," said Dailey.
Dailey said he saw one of the suspects fleeing across the street into a neighborhood.
The man was with friends in a red Jeep when he got out in the Wawa parking lot and was shot. The four other people with the victim ran away when shots were fired.
"Like I told the police we seen the guy running," said Dailey. "It was somebody with blood and he was just running."
Detectives were able to interview some of the red Jeep occupants. They are looking into the possibility that this may have been an accidential shooting.
No one has been charged at this time.
No further information has been released.
