Video shows alleged dog abuse, Newport News man arrested

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police charged a Newport News dog owner after a video allegedly showing him abusing his two German shepherds surfaced on social media.

Several 13News Now viewers shared the video with us, allegedly showing Ahmed Elsafty beating his two dogs with a stick.

The incident happened at Elsafty's house, in the Stoneybrook Estates community in Newport News over the weekend.

“A month ago, I had saw him take a rake. It was the one with the metal at the end, he beat it with it," said neighbor, Dylan MacDonald. "He brought it to the cage, kicked it to get it in there.”

Elsafty claims authorities and his neighbors have it all wrong, though.

The man claims that he didn't hit the dogs with a stick, but clapped at the dogs. He said the incident happened after one of the dogs jumped and knocked over his friend's child.

"I love my dogs," Elsafty said. “If I clap with my hands, so what? It’s not hurting the dog. It was to show him he’s doing something bad.”

Newport News city spokesperson, Kim Lee, says the Animal Services Division has received 6 prior calls on Elsafty's behavior from concerned neighbors.

Ahmed Elsafty is facing two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. He is expected to appear in court on November 15th.

The two dogs have been seized by Newport News animal control.
