Newport News police officer injured during foot pursuit

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A police officer was injured while chasing a suspect on foot in Newport News on Saturday.

At 12:12 a.m., police said an officer was stopped at a red light in the northbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue at Bellwood Road when a Ford Taurus sped past the officer. The officer tried to stop the Taurus at main Street, however, the driver did not immediately stop and turned onto Village Parkway, before making a u-turn, speeding through a stop sign and crashing into a Ford pickup truck on Jefferson Avenue.

The driver, 26-year-old Gary Jerrell Mack, of Newport News, fled the scene on foot, but was taken into custody after a short foot chase, according to police.

During the foot chase, one officer injured his back and hands. The injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Mack is facing several charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, refusal to take a blood or breath test, disregarding a red traffic signal, disregarding officer’s signal to stop and reckless driving. He was taken to the Newport News City Jail.
