Search for driver after man killed in Newport News hit-and-run

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are asking for the public's help to find the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident.

The fatal crash happened on the evening of Tuesday, October 18 in the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue when a car hit a pedestrian.

When crews arrived on scene they found 68-year-old Robert William Bertenshaw lying in the northbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue. 

According to officials, Bertenshaw was attempting to cross Jefferson Avenue when he was struck by a light-colored pickup truck that was traveling northbound. 

Bertenshaw was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Police say the light-colored pickup truck should have heavy front-end damage, a missing headlight, and a missing side mirror. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
