Plans to upgrade traffic signals in Newport News

13News Now Niko Clemmons has more on the story.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) – Traffic signals in Newport News will be getting an upgrade soon.

Director of Engineering for Newport News Everett Skipper says they're spending $2.5 million dollars to update traffic lights across the city.

They're buying new technology, which consists of different controllers, cameras and sensors.

The idea is that the new technology and new signals manage light cycles better and make traffic more efficient.

“We take traffic congestion seriously,” Skipper says. “Newer features are now available to allow us to do more and improve the flow and safety of traffic.”

Skipper says they'll focus on areas with older equipment or areas with more issues. They hope to install the new technology in the next 90 to 120 days.
