Police: 19-year-old broke into Newport News home, tried to rape woman

A man broke into a woman's home and attacked her in front of her young siblings

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A 19-year-old man is facing several sexual assault charges for allegedly trying to rape a woman after he broke into her house in the middle of the night. 

Lou Thurston, the spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department, says officers were alerted to a burglary in progress around 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday at a home in the southeast area of the city.

Police say Christopher James Stuart broke into the house, assaulted a woman and then attempted to rape her. 

He was allegedly confronted by one of the woman's juvenile siblings and ran. 

Special Victims Unit picked up the investigation. Stuart was arrested just before 7 p.m. the day of the alleged crime. 

Stuart is charged with three counts of abduction, forcible sodomy attempt, entering a dwelling with intent to commit rape and malicious wounding.
