Man shot by intruders during home invasion speaks out

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) – Sheer panic for a Newport News man who was shot Friday morning during a violent home invasion.

The gunman and another suspect are still on the loose. Detectives are actively searching for the men responsible.

Officers were called to the 1300 block of Moyer Road around 2:27 a.m. Police say the incident began when a 54-year-old man woke up hearing noises in his home. He went to investigate, and encountered one intruder.

The victim noticed a second suspect. Seconds later, the man exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects.

The homeowner was shot in his left leg. Both male suspects then fled the scene.

The victim's injuries are said to be non-life threatening. Police say it is unclear if anything was taken.

13News Now spoke with the victim Friday afternoon. He says his family was the only thing he could think about as he was bleeding.

“Why did you have to shoot me?” the victim asks. “If you would have asked me for help, I would have given it to you.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
