Whale found stranded in shallow water of James River has died

Despite rescue efforts, a whale that was stranded in the James River in Newport News is dead

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Newport News Police tell us that the fin whale that was found stranded in a stretch of the James River in Newport News has died and is being moved to deeper water.

Teams plan to haul the whale off to Craney Island. 

Newport News Police Department spokesman Brandon Maynard said the whale was be stuck near the beach in the 700 block of Waterfront Circle. 

According to the necropsy report showed the whale had excess amounts of parasites in the kidneys, which is likely compromised the animal.

Initial findings are consistent with verminous nephritis.
