Woman forced into home at gunpoint, raped in Newport News

Newport News police said someone forced a woman into her apartment home and raped her.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are investigating a rape that detectives said took place early Friday morning.

A woman was outside her home at Waterman's Crossing Apartments when a person pulled a gun on her and told her to go back into the home. Once inside, he sexually assaulted and robbed her. The suspect ran away after the assault.

Officers said the woman did not know her attacker.

Neighbors are speechless. Dustin Murphy lives at the complex with his wife and their young daughter.

“It's crazy someone could have done that and gotten away with it, regardless of the time,” Murphy says. “My wife walks to her car by herself, but she won't anymore.”

Neighbors say the neighborhood is quiet for the most part. Some crime and there, but nothing like this.

“I was surprised and it's unexpected,” Michael Ose says. “I read in the paper, see in the news, but when it's close to home it's a shocking."

The suspect is described at a heavy set black man, with short hair and a short goatee. He is believed to be 6'01" and was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, a multi-colored shirt underneath, black shorts, and black and white high top Nikes.
