How to get around town during Harborfest

Harborfest 2017: Here's what streets you should avoid as the largest, 3-day maritime festival gets underway.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Harborfest kicks off June 9 and there will be plenty of options available for people who are traveling to and from the weekend-long event.

There also will be some things to keep in mind if you choose to drive to the festival.

Waterside Drive will be closed Thursday, June 8 through Sunday, June 11, between Main Street and Martin's Lane. To avoid the closures, driver can use Atlantic Street or St. Paul's Boulevard to reach Waterside Drive.

People will be able to park at any City of Norfolk parking garage from Friday to Sunday. The cost is 5 dollars in cash.

MacArthur Center garages will have regular fees on Friday, June 9 and Sunday, June 11. On Saturday, the garages will accept only cash. The cost to park is 2 dollars until 5 p.m., and 5 dollars from 5 p.m. to close.

Hampton Roads Transit also is changing its schedule to accommodate visitors to Harborfest, and the schedule can be found HERE.

The Tide Light Rail will run norfmally on Friday until 10 p.m., then in 15-minute intervals until Midnight.

On Saturday, the Tide will have a regular schedule until 4:30 p.m., then arrive every 10-15 minutes at stops.

The final day of Harborfest, the Tide will resume it's regular schedule at 11 a.m.

The Ferry will have a normal schedule with extra boats.

Shuttle buses will be available from the Newtown Road Light Rail Station to MacArthur Square on Saturday at 4 p.m. 

Following the fireworks show, the shuttle buses will be available at the MacArthur Square station for outbound trips to Newtown Road.
