Man charged with arson after Norfolk house fire

Firefighters battled a house fire in Wards Corner on Birmingham Ave. One person was taken into custody.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police have arrested and charged one man with arson following a house fire in Wards Corner Monday afternoon.

Donald William Stricker III was charged with arson after being accused of starting a fire in the 500 block of Birmingham Ave.

Units were dispatched just after 3:15 p.m. to that location.

Crews reported that fire was coming from the side of the house and in the attic.

Firefighters were forced to evacuate the home around 3:30 p.m. after noticing the roof was starting to collapse.

Defensive operations started to contain the flames. The house is now being evaluated for stability before crews go back inside.

Officials say the flames were fully contained at 4:45 p.m.

No other details have been released at this time, including the identity of the person in custody or what exactly started the fire.
