NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A homicide investigation is underway after Norfolk police say a man was found shot on Ogden Avenue early Saturday morning.
A call came in to Norfolk dispatchers shortly before 3 a.m. reporting a possible gunshot victim in the 7800 block of Ogden Avenue.
Officers arrived to find 25-year-old Michael A. Raether suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk general Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Raether's mother spoke with 13News Now by phone Saturday night. She confirmed that her son was a sailor with the United States Navy.
She also says that Raether was killed on his son's third birthday.
Raether is said to have last resided on a Norfolk-based Naval ship.
Commander Dave Hecht, a spokesman for Commander Naval Air Force Atlantic, told 13News Now a sailor stationed on the USS George H. W. Bush was killed in a shooting around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 7800 block of Ogden Drive, however, he could not comment on the sailors identity as it is a policy of the military not to release a victim's identity for at least 24 hours to ensure the family has been notified.
“The U.S. Navy would like to express its sincere condolences to the family, friends and shipmates of this sailor,” Hecht said.
An investigation found that Raether was shot during an attempted robbery. During the robbery, the suspect shot Raether and ran from the scene.
The suspect is described as a black male with a light complexion, last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
