Norfolk City council approves bonds for Sentara

13News Now Jaclyn Lee has the story.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk city council approved the issuance of Sentara's revenue-based bonds today.

The money is part of Sentara's ongoing expansion project.

The hospital has added three floors to the two existing wings, expanded the emergency department and modernized operating rooms.

An attorney for Sentara said under current federal tax law, Sentara can use its own money to start construction for a project like this and then issue tax-exempt bonds to get reimbursed.
