NSU football player found shot to death in New Jersey

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk State University is mourning the loss of defense back Dy-Shawn Simpkins, who was shot to death in New Jersey Friday morning. 

Our partners at the NorthJersey.com report that Dy-Shawn Simpkins, who is from New Jersey, was found with gunshot wounds and unresponsive inside a car in East Orange.

Another man was killed in the same incident, and a third was injured but expected to survive. 

Simpkins graduated high school in 2016. NSU announced him as a recruit in January of 2017. 

“On behalf of our administration, coaches and student-athletes, we want to express our condolences to Dy-Shawn’s family,” Norfolk State Athletic Director Marty Miller said in a statement to NorthJersey.com. “He will be dearly missed by the entire Norfolk State University family.”

There were no arrests in the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.
