Man charged in weekend Norfolk homicide

Neighbors tell 13News Now reporter Megan Shinn they heard screaming after the gunfire.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is facing charges in connection to a double shooting that left one man is dead and another is injured. 

Police said the shooting happened just before 2 a.m. on Dec. 10 in the 1000 block of Ivaloo St. 

Upon arrival, officers found 31-year-old Claude Smith inside a vehicle that had been shot. 

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. 

As police were investigating, they discovered another man inside a home that had also been shot. 

That man was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be a serious but non-life threatening injury.

On Monday, 25-year-old Gary Lee Drew Jr., was arrested by members of the Norfolk Police Fugitive Squad and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. 

He is facing charges of 2nd degree murder, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. 

Neighbors say they're shocked.

They told us they live on a family friendly street within walking distance from Norview Middle School. 

“They all  (neighbors) went to school here. Grew up, started a family," said Joseph Chaldress. He grew up visiting family on Ivaloo Street.

June Sherman said she lives next door to where the incident took place. She said she heard the screaming form a female neighbor she hasn't met yet, “It definitely was not an easy feeling. It was very uncomfortable and scary,” said Sherman.

Sherman moved into her house just three months ago.

She said police knocked on her door just after 2:00 AM.

Sherman said, “they were looking for somebody that had walked by and my brother has a camera in the window. We were hoping that we might have caught something.”
