First responders, witnesses lift car off pinned motorcyclist

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are investigating after a motorcyclist was hit by a car Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. near Colley Avenue and West 21st St.

When emergency crews arrived they found a 56-year-old man pinned under a red Toyota Corolla.

According to a preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist was stopped at a red light when a Toyota Corolla stopped behind him. A 37-year-old man driving a Toyota Prius stopped behind the Corolla, and when the light turned green the man slammed into the Corolla, forcing the Corolla to roll over the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist fell off of the bike and landed in the street causing the Corolla to roll over him and pin him under the vehicle.

First responders and witnesses worked together to lift the car and free the man.

The man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries and is expected to be okay.

The drivers of the Prius and the Corolla stayed on scene. The Prius driver was charged with following too closely.

No one else was hurt.
