NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A 2-year-old girl whom police said was hurt by her mother and stepfather died Sunday.
Destiny Martin, 26, and Robert Griffis, 25, each are charged with two counts of Felony Child Neglect, and one count of Malicious Wounding.
The were arraigned in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Tuesday.
Police were at the family's house in Olde Huntersville around 7:45 a.m. on May 25. When they got to the home in the 700 block of Lexington St., they found 2-year-old Evalynn Arnold unresponsive. Medics took her to The Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters where she initially was in critical condition.
A neighbor who only wanted to be identified by his first name, Wayne, said he saw the whole thing unfold.
"They had the front door and the back door barricaded," said Wayne. "They said the house was under investigation. I heard that from over here."
Faye Nash also was watching from her home.
"They came out with bags of something, I suppose, and I asked the officer and he just said 'evidence,'" said Nash.
Investigators have not released the circumstances surrounding the girl's injury.
"It's really tragic," said Nash. "Somebody must have known and it's too bad that it went that far."
Martin and Griffis are in Norfolk City Jail. They have bond hearings set for June 1.
Because the medical examiner's office hasn't released Arnold's cause of death, police classify the case as an "undetermined death investigation."
