Volunteers give 'plate of love' to people in need on Thanksgiving Day

Dozens of Salvation Army volunteers in Norfolk helped serve meals to people in need on Thanksgiving Day.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The Salvation Army Hope Center was packed Thursday as more than one hundred people in need received a free Thanksgiving meal.

"We need to give a helping hand, because we are Americans," said a volunteer.

More than 50 people prepared and served the food. Longtime volunteer Reggie Martin said it's his passion to help those in need.

"Putting my hands on serving and giving a plate of love to the people, that is what I love," Martin told 13News Now.

Martin and his family help each and every year. He said, "We talk about thanks, giving thanks, and I am thankful for being in this privilege to serve."

"It feels wonderful to care about others and not just yourself," stated one volunteer whose time, like all the volunteers' time, was appreciated by those who ate the hot meal.
